National Historic Landmark - Matthew Henson Residence
On April 6, 1909, Mathew Henson, an African-American trailblazer on Robert Peary's expedition, became the first man known to reach the North Pole.
On the trip, he saved Peary's life on several occasions, conversed with the Eskimo in their language, and made the sledges that carried the team to the pole.
From1929 to 1955 Henson lived in the Dunbar Apartments.
