National Historic Landmark-Mohawk Upper Castle

National Historical Landmark-Mohawk Upper Castle Historic District

Archeological and architectural resources located in this district are associated with Nowadaga, the most westerly part of the major 18th-century Mohawk Indian community of Canajoharie.

During the 18th century, Mohawk people regarded Canajoharie as the most important community in the western half of Kanienke, their name for the Mohawk River Valley heartland.

Included in the district is the still-standing Indian Castle Church, a wooden-framed Anglican chapel built in 1769.
