National Historic Landmark -Old West, Dickinson College
National Historic Landmark -Old West, Dickinson College
Designed in 1803 by Benjamin H. Latrobe, one of America's first professional architects, Old West was completed in 1822.
It lies at the heart of the college founded by Dr. Benjamin Rush with the support of Thomas Jefferson and other leaders of the day.
James Buchanan, to be 15th president of the United States, lived in the building while a student at Dickinson.
In 2004, the college applied for a Save America's Treasures grant to stabilize and repair Old West. The roof trusses are failing, and an upgrade of the electrical system is needed to allow effective climate control through a new HVAC system, a new fire safety system and emergency lighting.
