National Historic Landmark-Oneida Community Mansion House
National Historical Landmark- Oneida Community Mansion House
Oneida, founded in 1848 by John Humphrey Noyes as a 19th-century communitarian experiment, was one of America's most radical and most successful experimental communities.
Perfectionism governed its activities, and the community practiced complex marriages and selective breeding. Industries, including a silverware factory, fueled the economy, and when the community dissolved in 1881, business operations continued as a joint stock company.
The rambling U-shaped building that housed the entire community is maintained essentially unchanged as a museum by Oneida Ltd.
