National Historic Landmark - Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital

Completed in 1859, this hospital for the mentally ill introduced innumerable innovations for its day and influenced similar institutions throughout America.

Its basic plan was the work of Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride (1809-18830, who believed that insanity should be treated as an illness.
