National Historic Landmark- Wolf Mountains Battlefield

Wolf Mountains Battlefield / Where Big Crow Walked Back and Forth

The Battle of Wolf Mountains, January 8, 1877, was a major turning point in the Great Sioux War in that it resulted in the eventual surrender, just a few months later, of the Lakotas and Northern Cheyennes, and led to their removal to reservation lands. Following Wolf Mountains, American Indians began to surrender, and on May 6 the arrival of Crazy Horse and his people at Camp Robinson, Nebraska, symbolized the formal conclusion of the war. The Battle of Wolf Mountains therefore signified the last major combat of the Great Sioux War, one that led directly to the denouement of final removal of tribal people from lands throughout the Northern Plains that white Americans sought for settlement and commercial venture.
