Oakland Cemetery

Civil War Heritage Trail

This cemetery contains the remains of

at least 15 Confederate veterans and

one Union veteran. Also buried here

is John C. McGehee, a prosperous

Madison County plantation owner and

staunch proponent of states' rights who

was a delegate to the Florida Secession

Convention in January 1861. He was

chosen as president of the Convention

and presided over its passage of the

Ordinance of Secession. A State

Historical Marker for John C. McGehee

is located at the cemetery.
