Oaklands

This antebellum mansion, begun about 1824 by Dr. James Maney, is located 1 1/4 miles N. on land acquired by Col. Hardy Murfree in 1789. Subsequently enlarged, it is an excellent example of architectural transition from frontier dwelling to plantation home to town house. Famed as host to many notables of the state and nation, it was here on July 13, 1862, that Nathan B. Forrest received the surrender of Federal forces occupying Murfreesboro.

Marker is on Broad Street (U.S. 41), on the left when traveling north.
