Oldest Stone Meeting House in New England

1711 founding of church – Jacob Hemingway first student of Yale, first pastor of church. 1772 started construction. 1774 first services here.1785 first town meeting. 1796 building completed, spire erected. 1979 tornado blew down steeple and part of roof. 1798 bell and clock installed. 1822 square pews replaced by slip pews, interior remodeled. 1825 wood stoves installed. 1840 replaced by coal. 1850 interior remodeled, doors and windows altered. 1859 belfry with new spire, 196 feet. 1868 first steam heated church in state. 1899 gas lighted. 1908 slate roof. 1928 electric lights.

Marker is at the intersection of High Street and Main Street (Connecticut Route 100), on the right when traveling north on High Street.
