“On the Shoulders of Giants”

This memorial garden was commissioned the 14th of April, 1998

and is dedicated to our African American ancestors who

have constructed, educated, served and contributed to

the University of Maryland. African Americans – both enslaved

and free – were a critical building block in the birth

and success of the university.

The Black Faculty and Staff Association and the

University of Maryland pay tribute to those giants who

have paved the way for African American faculty,

staff and students to succeed throughout the “struggle”.

Dedicated the 15th day of June, 1998

“MAAFA…Don’t ever forget. …We won’t”
