Origin of the Purple Heart Trail

Mount Vernon, Virginia

This marker commemorates the establishment of the Purple Heart decoration by General George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, on August 8, 1782.

The Purple Heart Trail memorializes those patriots who were awarded the Purple Heart Medal in combat in defense of their nation.
