Payne House – Coburg

This simplified Italianate home was owned by Charles Payne who ran the blacksmith shop and livery stable near the Cox House (#7) on North Willamette. Legend says Payne shod a particularly fine stallion originating from Coburg, Germany. He took the shoes off the stallion, hung them on the smithy wall and said “I name this place Coburg.” Prior to Payne’s proclamation in 1865, Coburg was called Willamette Forks, which was the closest post office at the time. Later, Payne’s son Homer and his wife Martha lived here. They operated a grocery store in town and were very active in church and civic-affairs.
