Pentagon
The Pentagon covers 34 acres of land, however a person can move from one office to another in six minutes.
The unique, five sided building houses over 25,000 employees and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a national monument on par with the White House and the Capital Building.
The U. S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps are the major service components within the Pentagon.
Construction started on September 11, 1941. Completed less than two years later to house the War Department that transformed into the Department of Defense in 1947.
The Pentagon has become synonymous with the military and symbolizes the accomplishments of the United States of America.
On September 11, 2001, 184 people died when a commercial airliner flew into the west side of the Pentagon. The terrorist attack killed people inside the building and everyone on board the aircraft.
A Memorial stands to honor those individuals whose lives were sacrificed in the name of freedom.
Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs conducts tours of the building and hosts 100,000 visitors annually.
