Piers, Ports, and Wharves

During the mid-1880s, 16 wharves reached into Pensacola Bay along a three-mile stretch of waterfront from Bayou Texar to Bayou Chico. A few years later, around 1900, railroad companies invested in Pensacola’s port facilities, improving wharves and piers in an effort to remain competitive in the shipping industry.

In 1943, the Pensacola Port Authority was formed; in 1976, port management was transferred to the City of Pensacola. Under public ownership, the port facilities have been modernized and maintained. Today, thousands of tons of non-container cargo pass through the Port of Pensacola each year.
