Pinnacles Overlook

The Pinnacles are chimneys formed when hot ash cooled after the big eruption. Formed during the same eruption that gave birth to the lake, these colorful volcanic spires are tucked away in the park’s southeast corner.

Pinnacles Overlook is a colorful collection of 100-foot-tall (30-meter) spires are being eroded from the canyon wall. The spires are “fossil fumaroles,” each marking a spot where volcanic gas rose up through hot ash deposits, cementing the ash into solid rock.

Pinnacle Valley provides great views of the volcanic spires. The Pinnacles Trail ends at the park boundary.
