Sidney Hillman
1887 - - - - - 1946
President
Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America
1914 – 1946
Chairman
Textile Workers Organizing Committee
1937 – 1939
Sidney Hillman was a labor giant. He provided leadership for hundreds of thousands of working people. Hillman sought a Nation of social and economic justice, where “no child will cry for food in the midst of plenty.”
He saw an activist trade union movement as the key to social change. For Hillman, the Union Movement embraced workers’s lives from the cradle to the grave. He saw the power of coalition: shop floor militancy, matched by power in the White House.
Under his leadership, the ACWA led the way for Unemployment Insurance, Health Care, Housing Programs, a Union-Owned bank and a national policy of Fair Labor Standards.
