Simon Green Atkins House

The Atkins House was built by Simon Green Atkins in 1893. Atkins was responsible for the development of the Columbian Heights neighborhood and for the creation of Slater Industrial Academy, later Winston-Salem University. Dr. Atkins came to Winston-Salem in 1890 to serve as the principal of the Depot Street Graded School, then the largest and most important public school for African-Americans in North Carolina. Atkins was president of Slater Industrial Academy from 1892-1934. The Atkins House has been relocated from the Columbian Heights neighborhood, which stood to the west. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
