Site of the Annapolis City Gates
1698-1790
All roads leading to this provincial capital, marked AA to guide the traveler, entered the city here beside the city gate house. A wooden fence, enclosing the city, kept out wandering cattle and "men of ill fame."
Erected by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Maryland, Annapolis Committee.
1983
Marker is at the intersection of West Street (Maryland Route 450) and Calvert Street, on the left when traveling east on West Street.
