Site of the Randolph House

Here stood the hotel where General U.S. Grant made his headquarters April 7, 1865, and opened correspondence with General R.E. Lee which terminated in the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House two days later. From the porch of the Randolph House Grant reviewed segments of his army - the last wartime review. The hotel was erected in 1859, and included Morton's Tavern built in 1798. The hotel collapsed during restoration in 1964.

This marker was erected by Joseph E. Wood, last proprietor of the Randolph House.

Marker is at the intersection of North Main Street (State Highway 45) and East Second Street, on the right when traveling north on North Main Street.
