Skopelos on the Bay
Skopelos on the Bay Seafood Restaurant was a Pensacola landmark popular for its fine dining and romantic atmosphere. Originally owned by the Silivos family, Skopelos offered Mediterranean influenced cuisine created by the chef and manager of the restaurant, Gus Silivos. When Skopelos first opened in 1959, its location was on the corners of M and Cervantes Streets. However, as the city expanded and shifted east, the original owner, Paul Silivos, decided to move the restaurant to Scenic Highway.
The new location of the restaurant was a popular one. Residents knew the building as the former location of a dance hall, from the 1940s-50s, called Scenic Terrace. During the early 1970s the site was also the location for a nightclub called Machinegun Kelly's, which burned to the ground by an unknown arsonist in 1976.
Throughout the restaurant's life, the Silivos family made their name known within the community. They are proud supporters of ARC Gateway, donate to Cerebral Palsy foundations, and donate time and food for a number of balls and events throughout Pensacola. Skopelos even made the international arena when former President George Bush visited in 1992. After the Silivos family took care of the President and First Lady's bill, President Bush mistakenly forgot to tip his server and his blunder made international headlines, including The Arab News.
Although the restaurant is currently closed due to misunderstandings within the entire Silivos family, Gus Silivos is hopeful the restaurant will open again. In the meantime, he currently manages and owns with his immediate family, a catering business called Nancy's Haute Affairs and a diner called Scenic 90 Café.
