Slavia

The town of Slavia was founded in 1911 as a religious and agricultural community by the Slavia Colony Company for recent Slovak immigrants from Czechoslovakia. Growing celery was the primary form of income for the residents. The Slovaks who founded the town were primarily Lutherans and founded St Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1912. The 1939 church structure is now one of the most visible remains of the town, as it is clearly distinguishable in front of the modern church structure. A small pink gas station building with "Slavia" painted on it also is visible on Aloma Ave. The residents of Slavia saw Florida as a great place to start a new way of life like other people who moved to Florida during the same time period.
