Spencer Bibbs School
The Spencer Bibbs Academy is named in honor of the first African American Supervisor of Colored Schools in Escambia County, Spencer Bibbs. Presently, the current building, located at 2005 North 6th Avenue, still operates as an elementary school.
In 1919, Spencer Bibbs requested and received approval to build a school on the east side of Pensacola. Initially, the Edward's Chapel, on the corner of Scott Street and 13th Avenue, housed the classrooms while the school building construction neared completion.
In 1924, the Spencer Bibbs Elementary School moved into a white wood-framed structure. Initially, the school offered classes for children up until the fourth grade. To continue the children's education, Mr. Bibbs used his wagon, from his second job as a hack driver, to transport the students from the east side of Pensacola to the west side.
The present day masonry was completed in 1962.
