Stephen Moreno

Stephen Anastasius Moreno 1870-1891

Stephen Anastasius Moreno was born in 1870 to the so-called "King of Pensacola," Don Francisco Moreno, and his third wife, Mentoria Gonzalez. Stephen was one of the twenty-seven children Francisco raised while, among other things, running a bank out of a chest of gold hidden beneath his bed.

Although Stephen is shown living at 24 East Belmont Street in the city directory for 1885, he is not listed in the census records before or after that date. Stephen married Fannie de Roulhac on the 27th of August, 1889. He died at 21 years of age in 1891. His small granite grave marker is unadorned save for his name and the years of his life. It is identical to those for five other family members in the immediate area, an oddity in such an eclectic cemetery.
