The artillery battalion of this division was commanded by Captain Henry C. Semple, and composed of the Georgia battery (Dawson's), Lieut. R. W. Anderson; Arkansas battery (Humphrey's), Lieut. John W. Rivers; Alabama battery, Capt. McDonald Oliver; and the Mississippi battery, Capt. Thomas J. Stanford.

On November 23rd, Gen. Stewart's division occupied the line of works east of Chattanooga Creek, with Gen. Breckinridge's division on its right. The night of Nov. 24th it was ordered to Missionary Ridge and posted with its left near Rossville Gap. In the afternoon of Nov. 25th its position was attacked on the left and left rear by Hooker's command, and in front by the divisions of R. W. Johnson and Sheridan. Being thus compelled to yield position the division retreated toward Ringgold.
