Storrs Siblings

Hearing and Deaf Teachers at ASD

Siblings Richard Satler and Sarah Storrs grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Sarah became deaf after suffering from Whooping Cough around 1 year old. She went to the American School for the Deaf from 1844 – 1850.

Richard Satler graduated from Amherst College 1853, and although he was hearing, joined his sister as a teacher at ASD. As ASD admitted younger students they began to hire more female teachers. She primarily taught children under 11 years old. While Sarah lived at the school at the Old Hartford Campus, Richard boarded with Francis Richmond at his home which was previously at this location. Later he would become amongst the first professors hired to teach at Gallaudet University.
