Student Health Center, Bldg. 63

Bldg. 63 Health Center

The need for additional dormitories and a Student Health Center brought about the design for ten more residence halls to be ready for occupancy by 1975. President Crosby wanted to stay within the construction costs of the first dorms constructed eight years earlier, perhaps an unrealistic objective.

Few people know that the state at that time provided bricks made with prison labor, bricks not available to the private sector, but rather only for state projects. Prison brick was of a lesser quality resulting in a greater variation in the modular size- appearing more like the adobe brick of the Southwest. It was decided to make a feature of the very randomness of the brick, emphasizing their variations.

Due to the costs of maintenance the dorms were razed leaving only the Student Health center as an example of construction with prison made brick.

Today the Student Health Center originally in Bldg. 63 has relocated, and continues to provide a variety of health care services for UWF students. http://www.uwf.edu/healthcenter/index.cfm
