1844 Timber Truss Bridge

The Wabash and Erie Canal authorities built the first bridge here in 1844 to accommodate the Canal’s only main line crossing of the Wabash River. The bridge superstructure consisted of five fixed and one draw timber spans. A walkway on the west side carried a track for a small mule-powered tramcar which towed canal boats to the opposite shore.
