The Salvaging of this Gun

( 11 inch Dahlgren )

was accomplished by the heroic efforts of

Adolphus W. and James C. Lacoste

and others

after engineers of both Federal and

Confederate Armies had pronounced it

impossible.

——

Due to the untiring efforts of

Major John Johnson, C.S.A., Mayor J.

Adger Smythe and Congressman William

Elliot. Materially aided by Lieut. Johnson

Hagood, U.S.A., the gun was raised from

the sands of Sullivans Island where it

had lain since the close of the

War Between the States, and saved to

posterity.

——

This tablet is placed by Charleston Chapter U.D.C. No. 4,

in commemoration of these loyal citizens.

Marker is on East Battery Street near South Battery Street, on the left when traveling north.
