The Williams House
Confederate President Jefferson Davis was a friend of the Williams family and was a guest in this c.1856 house. It is reported that some of his personal effects were stored in the Williams House during the Civil War.
After the Federal occupation of the city in 1862, the Williams family fled to Waldo, and the house was used by Union troops as officers' quarters.
The adjacent c.1859 Hearthstone building on the Williams House property was used as an infirmary for Union troops.
Though Jefferson Davis stayed at this 1859 Antebellum mansion when he was president of the Confederacy, it later became part of the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves. The secret room used for that purpose is still in existence. The house now serves as a bed and breakfast inn.
