Thomas Barksdale Hutcheson

Thomas Barksdale Hutcheson lived in the dairy barn at

Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and

Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), working his way

through college by milking cows. Widely known later

for his agricultural research and writing, he and his

brother, John, helped develop Virginia’s livestock,

poultry, and dairy industries and moved the state from

a tobacco and cotton economy into a sounder

diversified agriculture.
