Tredegar Iron Works

"The industrial economy of the South once revolved around a few acres of land in the Capital of the Confederacy."Giles Cromwell, Historian, 1992

"It is doubtful whether an abler business man than General Anderson ever lived in this state." Richmond Times, 1892

"The mechanic arts are the poor man's inheritance." Tredegar Workers, 1847

Across the canal stands the Tredegar Iron Works, which, with the Armory that once stood beside it, was the greatest industrial complex in the South. Run by Joseph Reid Anderson, the Iron Works, with a work force of immigrants and free and enslaved Blacks, produced up to half of all the armaments used in the Confederate war effort.

Marker can be reached from the intersection of South 7th Street and Tredegar Street.
