Troop Barracks

This structure was the first of

three barracks built between 1893 -

1897. Each housed one infantry battalion

of 320 men. This barracks was first

occupied in June 1894 by companies D, F

and G of the 21st Infantry Regiment

transferred from Fort Sidney, Nebr.

The second barracks and the site of

the third are located directly opposite.

The third barracks was damaged by fire

in 1974 and razed

In 1981, the two remaining structures

were restored and remodeled. Stone

and brick entries have replaced the

original full length wooden porticoes.

Marker is on U.S. Oval just north of Ohio Avenue.
