Troop Barracks
This structure was the first of
three barracks built between 1893 -
1897. Each housed one infantry battalion
of 320 men. This barracks was first
occupied in June 1894 by companies D, F
and G of the 21st Infantry Regiment
transferred from Fort Sidney, Nebr.
The second barracks and the site of
the third are located directly opposite.
The third barracks was damaged by fire
in 1974 and razed
In 1981, the two remaining structures
were restored and remodeled. Stone
and brick entries have replaced the
original full length wooden porticoes.
Marker is on U.S. Oval just north of Ohio Avenue.
