Union Academy

Near here stood Union Academy, conducted by Hardy and Crenshaw from 1861 to about 1869. Dr. Walter Reed, who discovered the carrier of yellow fever, and Dr. Robert E. Blackwell, long President of Randolph-Macon College, attended school here. Nearby was an iron foundry, established in 1855 by Captain Richard Irby.
