The result of the merging on this site in 1899 of two institutions founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society as follows:
1865 - Richmond Theological School for Freemen
1865 - Wayland Seminary, Washington, D.C.
1932 - Hartshorn Memorial College (opened in 1883 for the training of women) united with the university.
Marker is at the intersection of North Lombardy Street and School Road, on the left when traveling north on North Lombardy Street.
