Wells' Built Hotel

The Well's Built Museum of African American History is the site that was the Well's Built Hotel in the 1920s. Dr. William Monroe Wells was Orlando's first African American physician. Wells moved to Orlando in 1917 and constructed his home on South Street in 1921. After obtaining a building permit in 1926 Wells also constructed the South Street Casino, which was a popular venue for African Americans in Central Florida. Next to the South Street Casino he built the Wells' Built Hotel. The hotel was designed to house traveling entertainers and other African Americans during the era of segregation in Orlando. Notable guests included Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway and Jackie Robinson. In February of 2000, the hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2005 the Parramore district that encompassed this area of South Street was also registered as historic under Mayor Buddy Dyer. In 2009 the hotel opened as a museum focused on the area's African American history.
