William J. Burke
(1873-1946)
Cardiologist, Philanthropist. Born February 17,1873, San Miguel, Manila. Obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the University of Dublin, Ireland. Returned to practice his profession in Manila, 1900. Introduced and installed the first Electrocardiograph in the Philippines. Recipient of several Pontifical Orders for his Philanthropic Endeavors from various hospitals, convents, and religious orders in the country. Died July 23,1946. In his honor the city council of Manila enacted Ordinance No.7779. January 7,1993. Signed by Mayor Alfredo S. Lim. The said ordinance renaming David Street to William J. Burke, February 1,1993.
